Travel As An Empath

Hello Magic Makers,

I wrote this blog a while ago. Like, almost a year ago. It was before I had ever published a blog or sent many emails your way. As I was getting ready for my travels this week, I remembered this and decided it was time to throw it out of the nest and let it fly. I could have dusted it off and taken this intro out before sending, but what fun would that be? You know I’m about keeping it real with you, so I’m sending this out to you the way I originally wrote it.

Enjoy!
I have a confession to make. Are you ready for it? This is the very first blog I have ever written and for some reason, it’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever done. I’m honestly not even sure why I have never written a blog or why I find it so intimidating. (That’s probably an entire blog on its own so we’ll save the reasoning for another day!) But lately, I’ve been inspired to share more through words so I’ve decided to follow that feeling.
So here it goes! My. First. Blog. It’s going to be all about vibing high and staying healthy and happy when you travel. This is a topic that I’ve been thinking a lot about as of late because I have A LOT of upcoming travel and I’m already in prep mode for my trips. I realized there are many of you out there that may find this information helpful. Especially all of you traveling to the doTERRA DREAM Convention in one week! {This event is now past as this blog was written some time ago 😉}

For those of you that don’t know, I’m a leader in the essential oils world and I travel all over the country educating people on how to use essential oils in their homes and how to create the life of their dreams by sharing oils with others. This is what sets me on fire and it’s the work I know I was meant to do. But here’s another fact about me: I’m a super sensitive empath, too. This is a term that may be new to you. It just means that I feel everyone around me. (For more details on all things empath, grab your FREE download of my empathy guide here). Yup, I feel the entire airplane full of people; sad because they left a loved one, or nervous because they hate flying … the list goes on.

When I first started to travel, I would end up feeling like crappola. Not just because I was around so many people, but because I was letting my defenses get knocked down, too. This wasn’t something I had time for. There were people who needed the message I had to share, who were counting on me and they deserved the best version of me I could give. Not the version that had a screaming head and couldn’t even think straight.

Even if you’re not an empath, travel can be tough. Think of all of the people and germs we are exposed to in airports, hotels, restaurants, etc. How many times have you gone on a trip to return home with a case of the icks?

The cool part is: I’ve figured out how to create a big giant bubble around myself so that I can go out and serve all of you, but at the same time stay healthy and feeling great. I learned how to do it and I know you can too.

My TOP 5 Ways to Stay Healthy & Vibing High When Traveling:

1. Pick your seat wisely

This is a big one for me. And when I say pick your seat wisely, I mean your airplane seat (or the seat on whatever mode of transportation you use to travel to your destination). I primarily fly and drive to locations and I have “rules” for both modalities.

Let’s first look at flying. When I fly, I want to be as close to the front of the plane as possible and in an aisle seat. When I sit near the window I feel a bit more trapped in by all of the feels of the people on the plane. Same thing with sitting in the back of the plane.

I almost always fly business class so I can make sure I’m in the front. The little bit extra $ is well worth my sanity and being able to arrive at my destination ready to go. I pick
Delta as my preferred airline for many reasons, and I use their credit card as my business card. This allows me to rack up the miles with them and then use those miles for my travel upgrades and access to their lounge during travel.

When I’m traveling by car, I also pick my seat wisely! This just means I make sure my car is as comfortable and as tidy as possible. I try not to head out on a road trip with a messy car. One that is a bit more organized and ready makes me feel good, vs. one that is a mess and distracting.

2. Eat well and stay hydrated

Food and water are huge for staying in flow and on top of our game. This is an even bigger deal when traveling and one that I have honestly struggled with the most. I mean, you’re traveling, so fast food and foods you may not regularly indulge in as much are what you have the easiest access to.

I have learned the hard way that when I travel my food has to be even more whole, fresh and “clean” than when I’m at home. For me, this means absolutely NO dairy, wheat or processed foods and limited alcohol. BORING! Well, that’s how I used to look at it. Then I realized that these choices are way better than feeling like shit for 5 days!

I usually travel with some beef sticks, veggies, and bars in my bag. If I’m driving I will actually take a little cooler of food with me so I’m not tempted by the golden arches.

When I get to my destination, my first stop is usually a Whole Foods or Trader Joes to stock up on some more stuff for my stay. I check this out ahead of time and make sure once I land I have time to grab groceries before checking into my room. I pick these two locations because they are ones I have at home and I’m familiar with the layout. I can be in and out fast!

Common things I grab: Kombucha, packages of raw cashews, veggies and fruit in the ready to go section and alkaline water. Staying hydrated when you travel can be tough. I find that when I drink the pH water on the go, I stay even more hydrated.

Get a travel water bottle! I aim to fill it 4-5 times per day to stay at peak hydration. And don’t forget to add lemon to your water for an extra boost of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. It also helps maintain the pH balance of the body, promotes digestion and increases the metabolic rate.

3. Create your space and boundaries

This just means you are staying where it’s comfortable for you. For me, this means a hotel room with no roommates (unless my family is traveling with me, of course). If I’m staying with someone else, I make sure to have my own room. I cannot and will not sleep on air mattresses, share rooms with others, or sleep on a tiny bed. I know this may sound snobby, but I need to feel good to do my job so this has become non-negotiable. I must have a space to get good sleep, do some yoga and meditation, and relax. Remember that part about being an empath? I feel people all day long so I need a space where I don’t have to feel anyone, and you do, too.

This isn’t just a rule I have for traveling for business but one I have when vacationing and visiting family, as well. I need my recharge time and so do my kiddos. We’re all much happier and creating much better memories if we’re not sick or irritated.

I know this can be hard when others are offering their space or you feel like you have to stay with your in-laws at Thanksgiving. But you’re allowed to choose wisely: stay where you don’t have your space and you’re a hot mess, or stay somewhere else and enjoy the moments you spend with the people you are there to visit and serve.

4. Travel with the comforts of home

This doesn’t mean you have to take everything but the kitchen sink with you. It just means you should take along some of the things you enjoy that will make your travels much easier or more pleasant.

Again, if you are flying a lot, pick your preferred airline and get their credit card. This way you are getting those miles for upgrades and the bags are usually included for free. My two favorites are Delta and Southwest. Not just because I get free bags, but because they are friendly and usually on time. ☺

Here are a few comforts of home I take along with me:
  • Yoga mat to make sure I get in my movement and stretches
  • Bags of my favorite tea to relax at the end of the day
  • Essential oil diffuser and a few favorite oils
  • All of my toiletries
  • Favorite yoga flow downloaded on my device
  • All of my supplements to stay healthy on the go

5. Support your body with doTERRA!

I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t share with you a few of my top favorite oils for travel. They are a huge foundation of why I can stay vibing high. These are my go-to products that must be packed in my bag on any trip:

DigestzenDigestzen Tabs and Terrazyme: This trio goes everywhere with me for those times when I do eat something that my body doesn’t like. Even if I’m paying close attention to my food, sometimes there is a slip or I just can’t control it.
MetaPWR Advantage in my water: This aids my metabolism while traveling and it also helps me not get an upset tummy on the plane! The whole MetaPWR system is fabulous!
Cedarwood and Rose: These oils are my favorite sleep oils and ensure I get a good night’s rest.
OnGuard Everything: I travel with OnGuard Softgels to keep my immune system boosted. I take one daily while traveling. OnGuard Hand Sanitizer keeps surfaces and hands clean. And OnGuard throat drops boost my immune system and keep my throat open to speak to all the people. I pop one in at the beginning of each flight.
Lifelong Vitality: These are my daily supplements that my body needs for so many reasons.

Make your next trip the best one yet. Grab some oil samples from me before saying "bon voyage!"
